Dean's Message Welcome to the
The health of the American people and the citizens of the world has many determinants, including the environments in which they live and work, their own behavior, their social and economic status, the structure of their families and relationships, and the health services to which they have access and actually use. Your study in the School will likely focus you in one of these areas more than others but we must all be aware that our health is an ecological phenomenon that results from the complex interplay of all of these factors. As you attempt to make improvements in one or a few of them as professionals, this fundamental fact of our field must be central to your understanding and action.
Because population health must be viewed from an ecological perspective, the importance of public health as a professional field is increasing. This fact is evident in popular media as well as scientific studies. You have an exciting challenge ahead of you as you begin your study and prepare yourself to make a difference to the health of a community, a state, the nation, or internationally. The need to improve health and the opportunities for action are almost limitless and provide the basis for a rewarding career for you. Let me assure you that I and all of the faculty and staff of the School are committed to providing the best preparation possible for you.
Again welcome to UNTHSC, and my best for a great year:
